bigger antenna
In your car or in your house? More expensive CB radios will give you lots of features and extras, but it will NOT give you better reception. CB’s are so cheap these days that they’re all built for maximum 5 watts. After that, it’s a function of your antenna.
In your vehicle, you’re going to want to make sure that you have a good antenna, that it’s properly mounted and trimmed for best reception. In your house, it’s a bit easier. Just get the antenna higher into the air. If it’s already up pretty high, then you’re stuck with the reception that you’ve got. CB’s don’t have that much effective range. 5 miles at best under the greatest conditions, and often more like a couple miles for most situations.
There’s many things that affect the reception on a CB radio’s reception. The most important is the antenna type, location, and match (SWR). While some radios do have better reception than others, none will do well without a good antenna, properly set up in a good location. As others have mentioned, the answers will be better if it is known if this is a base antenna or a mobile. For a base, the height is important, as well as having a good ground. Some types will perform better than others. While height isn’t so much a factor in mobile antennas, location of mounting is. Ideally, a mobile antenna is best when mounted in the center of the vehicle, if possible. This would depend on which type of antenna you have (magnet mount, whip, trunk mount etc.) Below is a good source for CB radio information.
