ALL CB radios require an antenna to work properly.

The only CB radios that DON'T need an an external antenna are walkie talkies.

If however you have a car radio or a base station set you definitely DO need an external antenna.

its a different antenna entirely with a co-axial cable. It then needs to be adjusted with a SW Meter to match the wavelenght with the radio or you cannot transmit.

For the best performance, yes. You can buy a magnet-mount antenna for as little as $15. You can also buy a device that allows you to connect to your standard am/fm car radio antenna along with the car radio; I've used them in the past, and the results were satisfactory, but not as good as with a separate cb antenna.
